Some things to keep in mind when choosing an auto repair shop are:
Start by asking friends, family members and colleagues which auto repair shop they use. There is no better recommendation than that of someone else who uses their services. Much as you would when searching for any other business, try to build a full picture of the shop’s business ethics. The Better Business Bureau can help with this by advising if there are any negatives against the auto repair shop.
A good auto repair shop should also have a well presented reception area with good lighting and up-to-date equipment. There should also be certification posted showing that the mechanics are licensed for business in your area and that the manufacturer of your vehicle is listed under the mechanic’s certification. Certification reading ASE should be the bare minimum on display.
The mechanic you choose or the shop should be well versed in working with your particular make and model of automobile. If you need your brake system worked on or your electrical system you need to be sure the mechanic working on your vehicle is well qualified in these areas and not just an oil change specialist.
Other aspects to consider:
By this stage you should have narrowed your choices down to a few shops that are experienced with your type of vehicle and well certified. Assuming this is the case, there are some other considerations that may help narrow your choice further. Are there additional benefits to using your chosen auto repair shop? For instance, some shops have loaners for customers who need extensive work done on their vehicles or they may have a connection with a local car rental company. This becomes important when it will take a few days to repair your vehicle and you need a way to get back and forth to work. Also, find out if they have convenient hours like weekends and evenings.
