Tools For Adsense

by Owen Jones on November 15, 2011

If you are considering attempting to make some money with Google’s Adsense, it is worth doing some research first. After all, you have a number of items to think of before you start. These are items like the colour, the size and the position of the adverts themselves, but you also need to know Google’s rules for letting you make use of Adsense. For instance, there are restrictions on how many ads and search boxes you can put on any one page, but not on any one website.

Google itself provides a ton of intelligence about which are the best size ads to use and where to position them. The first thing for anyone wanting to use Adsense to do is go and read what Google has to say on its own product.

Experience may have taught you to be a bit suspicious when listening to people blowing their own trumpet and some scepticism is helpful here as well.

Google allows three ads, two links and three search bars per page (I think at the time of writing) and if you do not put all this stuff on your web page, Google will email you suggesting that you do. Take this with a pinch of salt. Google does not really care if you earn a living wage as long as everyone makes something, because they get 50% of what you turn over. Times hundreds of millions of websites.

Let’s take these units one by one. First the search box: why would you want to supply your visitors with an simple escape path? You only get about 4-5 cents for doing it whereas if they click out in another way you can get $6-$9. Crazy.

Second, the links: links pay out very low per click; far lower than the ads - again look for 5-6 cents a click. They are a waste of time. Third, the ads: the big ads are good earners and so are the skyscrapers. Other ads might do well on your site, they do not on mine and nor does the option of allowing picture ads.

Why put a big box advertisement and then hobble it by allowing one picture advertisement on it, when you can have four different text ads? Again, crazy. Now, merely a thought on this. This is pure speculation you understand: if you put three ads going down your page and a link at the bottom, what occurs?

I have to take for granted that Google will position its most expensive ads first to maximize revenue, so as the visitor reads down the page the ads are gradually becoming worth less money.

The reader gets to the bottom of the page and clicks out on your cheapest ads having by passed your expensive ads at the top. So why not just put one substantial advert block and be done with it?

Google gives plenty of help with statistics including which web pages earned the most money and where the surfers came from. Look for their link to Google Analytics and install the small piece of code on your site. You will learn a great deal. Learn to read your cPanel statistics as well and study them regularly

If your browser accepts Add-Ons, do a search for ‘Adsense’ perhaps there are a couple you will find useful.

Getting Cinema Quality Sound At Home

by Owen Jones on November 15, 2011

Do you love going to the movie theater and get lost in the realism that their superior sound systems create? If you do, then I bet you are also one of those people who dislikes going there, only to have a potentially fantastic evening spoiled by noisy people talking through the film or letting their cell phones ring.

I used to be fond of the movie theater, but that was in the time when people respected the rights of others to listen to a movie in silence. There were no crying babies, ringing mobile phones or noisy youths in movie theaters and if they got in they were soon kicked out if there was any noise.

Nowadays, cinema managers seem to take the easy route of letting these people spoil it for others. As a result, more and more quiet people are staying at home and the cinemas are becoming even noisier. If you are one of the stay-at-homes, but miss the cinema, why not recreate one in your home?

Build yourself a home cinema with surround sound. You will never be sorry for installing surround sound in your home, because you will be able to play your favourite films, the TV and your music through it. The distinction between surround sound and stereo or even quadraphonics is breath-taking.

Different people have different requirements, aspirations, funds and even hearing ability, so it is tricky to suggest a system to a mass audience, but there are ways and means for going about the purchase of your own home theater system. A lot of people buy a kit home theater. This is OK, if funds are limited, but you will want to upgrade the screen and the speakers before very long. If you just want to put a home theater in a small spare bedroom and do it quickly and easily, then this method is for you.

If, however, you want a bit more, then you might prefer to get a bigger screen and make do with the speakers that came with the kit. These can easily be renewed later. If you want to get everything part by part, you will need a screen, speakers and DVD player. If you want to play games too, replace the DVD player with an Xbox.

But back to the speakers, whether you are renewing or putting your own system together, the strategy I suggest hold true. Write down the dimensions of your room or better still do a little plan of it to scale. Take this around the shops and malls and try to listen to a few installations in a room similar to your own. This could be difficult, but you might be lucky.

Decide whether you need a 3.1; 4.1; 5.1; 6.1 or even 7.1 set of compatible surround sound speakers. Basically, it all depends on the size of your room, but the shop assistant will be able to demonstrate and advise you. As a guideline, a 5.1 surround sound set will be sufficient for most rooms. The figures stand for normal speakers and sub-woofers: ie 5.1 means five normal speakers and one sub-woofer.

The arrangement of the speakers depends on the size and shape of the room and on your personal preference, but the standard layout would be: one speaker the far left and far right of the screen and one underneath it with two more speakers slightly apart from each other at the back of the audience. The sub-woofer can go at the front or the rear.

Looking For Cheap Satellite TV?

by Ryan Steele on June 20, 2011

Practically everybody who watches television would like to have cheap satellite TV service if they knew they could get it. A few people in remote parts of the world where there is no electricity don’t watch TV. There are some people in America who don’t watch TV but they are the sort of people who read books and do a lot of do-it-yourself projects.

However most people like to watch TV and they want to enjoy the experience. And most people do not wish to spend extravagant amounts of money to be able to watch TV. Okay, some people do like to spend a lot of money on TV. They consider it a luxury and they want to show off. So they buy the most expensive huge flat screen that will fit in their house and speakers as big as Stonehenge. Luxury-loving television watchers will also spend a fortune signing up with the most expensive provider.

But normal people who consider television more of a necessity than a luxury are not looking for ways to spend the most money. They just want a good home entertainment value. They want to see the programs they want to see and they want their programs to look good. And they don’t want to break the bank doing it.

There may be some economy-minded people on the earth who still watch a box with rabbit ears on top or one connected to a scary looking antenna on top of the house. These are people who drive a Desoto and don’t know that it’s a vintage automobile. When you mention satellite to them they think of Sputnik.

However, people who are actually living in the 21st century and are aware that they are want something better. These folks may have already tried cable and decided they still want something better. So they will begin to investigate what satellite can do for them.

Then they will begin to compare satellite providers. There are a lot of options available. This is not like when there were three VHF channels and one UHF channel and they only broadcast in color about half the time and signed off the air at 2 am with the National Anthem or Jan Peerce singing Bluebird of Happiness.

Nowadays there are lots of channels and people who want to get the best bundles have to do their homework. They study the ads and look for specials. The go to the website and compare prices and products. Smart people ask their friends which satellite provider they have and how they like it. They find out what channels they get and how much they pay. It’s no bargain to get two hundred channels if none of them have the programs you like.

Some shoppers go on the internet and ask questions on sites that discuss consumer products. They go to Facebook and ask their FB friends. If someone complains vehemently about their crappy satellite provider find out who their provider is and who they are switching to.

After doing some diligent research you may find that the best provider of cheap satellite TV is Dish Network. You may find that they have low prices and bundles that include the channels you want to watch. If that is the case you should call them and sign up. That’s probably what a sensible person would do.

Computer Programming - A Brief History

by Owen Jones on June 2, 2011

If a definition of a computer is that it is a machine that needs to follow various directions in order to carry out the tasks required of it, then the history of computers can be traced back to Charles Babbage’s ‘analytical engine’ of 1837. The instructions that these machines or computers, as we call them, follow are written as lines of programming in a programme (UK) or program (USA).

In fact there were several ‘programmable’ devices before the ‘analytical engine’. The was the Al-Jazari castle clock of 1206, which told the times of the year, the seasons, the phases of the moon and much more besides and the sequences could be adjusted - a form of early programming.

Another example was the Jacquard loom of 1801, which allowed intricate patterns to be woven automatically by a loom following directions in the form of holes punched in a series of cards. This form of programming, using punched cards, was still being used in computing in the Nineteen Sixties and early Seventies.

If these engines can be called computers, it is fair to call them ’single purpose computers’. What most people think of as a computer these days is a ‘general purpose’ machine which can be programmed to perform a wide range of tasks from calculating a spreadsheet to displaying a film.

The problem with early computers (first quarter of the Twentieth Century) was how to change the programme and how to input the data quickly. Alan Turing made the first important steps in this direction in 1936 with his formalization of the concepts of the algorithm and computation using the Turing Machine. This item supplied a blueprint for the first digital computer.

The inventor of the first programmable and therefore multi purpose computer was Konrad Zuse. The Zuse Z3 of 1941 is considered to have been the first programmable fully automatic computer.

The Atasanoff-Berry Computer of 1937 was an early, partially programmable computer and formed the basis of ENIAC (1946). ENIAC was the first general purpose electronic computer.

Two key concepts were introduced by John von Neuman in 1945. These concepts radically influenced the composing of programming languages. The first was the ’shared program method’, which dictated that programs should not be hard-wired into the machine making it multi-functional and the second was the concept of the ‘conditional code transfer’ or subroutine, which could get called from any juncture in the program to carry out a function.

Short Code Language came out in 1949 which required programmers to work in binary and Grace Hopper brought out the A-0 compiler in 1951 which greatly speeded up the process of writing code.

FORTRAN was developed for scientific use in 1957 and COBOL in 1959 for office use. LISP is a language that was designed to handle lists in 1958 and is still being used for this reason today. 1958 also saw the release of ALGOL, which was the launch pad from where Pascal, C, C++ and Java emerged. PERL came along in 1987, Java in 1994.

Microsoft is having a great deal of success with its Visual Basic, which makes use of widgets, but who knows what other languages will be invented in the future and what we will be able to do with them?
