Iron Chef Invades America

by Ross Everett on July 1, 2010

The concept of the show is right out of professional wrestling, but there it is in living color every week on ‘The Food Network’. Prominent chefs from all over the world go ‘mano a mano’ in judged cooking competitions. That’s the premise of ‘Iron Chef’ which is easily the most entertaining cooking show in television history. Even non-foodies will enjoy the competition and the nearly inscrutable strangeness of the show.

The show was originally created by the Fuji TV network in the Japan, and the original Japanese title translates literally to The Iron Men of Cooking. The premise behind the competition is even more outlandish. An eccentric millionaire and food lover MC Kaga, summons the summons the finest chefs in Japan to do battle in his kitchen stadium. Also in residence are three Iron Chefs, each representing a different type of cuisine (Chinese, French and Japanese). The summoned culinary challenger picks which Iron Chef he wants to take a crack at and the contest begins.

Adding even more ’spice’ to the show–each dish must include the ‘theme ingredient’ which is kept a mystery until immediately before the competition begins. With great pomp and amid smoke and pyrotechnics, Kaga reveals the ‘mystery ingredient’. Sometimes it’ll be something basic like apples or tofu, other times it’s more obscure like ox tail or some otherworldly shellfish.

At that point, the chefs have an hour to prepare a seven course meal, served to a discerning panel of B-List celebrities that usually include a couple of ‘TV Presenters’ and a ‘fortune teller’. The judges rate and discuss each course and declare a winner. Its a great honor to beat one of the Iron Chefs, though its no easy feat.

The announcing is what makes the show. There’s a hysterical play by play announcer, an excitable color commentator, and an even more hyperactive sideline correspondent who will break in the commentary frequently with revelations such as observing that a chef is using fresh ginger in a dish or some similar piece of trivia. Apparently one of the announcers is a legit sumo wrestling announcer in Japan, making the strange connection between ‘Iron Chef’ and Japanese pro wrestling even more pronounced.

The dishes that the chefs come up with are always pretty amazing, creative and complex–if not always appetizing. Some of their creations look yummy, but a dessert with a compulsory use of carp isnt exactly my cup of green tea. Nonetheless, the creative process and intensity of the competitors is amazing. Even as challenging as this is, the requirement that a theme ingredient be used in every component of the meal really ups the ante.

The Food Network has recently begun production of a native grown version called ‘Iron Chef America’. It has a similar format, but really loses a lot from the Fuji TV original.

Completing a Family Tree Template

by Frank Jones on May 17, 2010

The proper way to input information on a family tree.

Putting names into your family tree template:

First you would record the first name, then their other names, and finally the surname. Surnames must be capitalized, and this means it would be displayed as such: John Lyon Smith. Married women will always have their maiden name listed, but if you do not know their maiden name, you should write “unknown”. In order to indicate unknown, you would write the following: Mary Wright//. The // indicates that the maiden name is unknown.

If there are nicknames involved, then the nickname should be shown in quotes. For example, Jacob “Jac” SMITH. If someone has been adopted or undergone a legal name changed, then they should have the original name in brackets, and then a.k.a followed by their new name.

Remember to record surnames exactly as you find them. Don’t change them to what you think the correct spelling should be. Names were often misspelled due to illiteracy, transcription errors, or misunderstandings. Be sure to record every variation you find e.g. Smith, Smyth, Smithe may all represent the same individual so should be recorded as Mark Peter SMITH/SMYTH/SMYTHE.

In some cases, surnames were deliberately changed for political or social reasons, possibly when immigrating to a new country. If you know the original spelling, record that version first, followed by the later version(s) used.

Entering dates in a family tree form:

To enter dates properly, you would use the European standard. For instance you would record the day first, the month, and then the year(dd Mmm yyyy). Yes, the first letter of the month is a capital, so you would enter your dates as such: 12 Apr 1978.

If you don’t know the exact date, then you would place a prefix such as: abt which means: about. Another word you can use is ‘circa’ which means ‘around’. Use these when you want to use an approximate date rather than an exact one.

If you don’t know the exact date but can establish a range of dates between which the event occurred, then use the abbreviation bet. (short for “between”), with a hyphen between the two dates. E.g. bet. 22 Jan 1950 - 26 Feb 1950.

When dates are shown in numerals only, in North America the month is shown first (04/06 would be Apr 6). In Europe and former colonies it is the day that is usually shown first (04/06) would be 4 Jun). If you are not sure in which way the recorded date should be interpreted, you might want to add a comment in the notes to indicate how you think it should be interpreted and why.

Location data and abbreviations

Locations need to be recorded with extreme accuracy. It is important that you try to record the location in its entirety, and as such you should start with the smaller region, the country, and then the area. So with that in mind you would write it as such: London, England, United Kingdom (Or UK). Make sure you record births and deaths accurately; for a birth you would write B, for a death you would write D, and for marriage you would write M.

Using Primary and Secondary Sources to Build an Accurate Family Tree

by Frank Jones on May 4, 2010

When you gather information that is wrapped around your family tree, you need to make sure everything is as accurate as possible. Any materials you uncover during your resource that provides part of the history will be your sources. So when you start filling your family tree, it’s important to start “citing your sources.”

It helps you judge how accurate the information you gathered is compared to everything else. When you share a family tree with others you want to make sure it is all as accurate as possible. This is especially true if you ever decide to publish your family history or family tree online.

If you find information that conflicts with what you already have in your family tree data, knowing the source of your original data can help you refer back and determine which information is most likely to be more accurate.

There will be new details along the way as well, and having everything handy will be essential to your research. It’s possible that you overlooked something the first time around.

Validating your findings

Starting a family tree is quite easy, considering you will provide information you already know. The question is; have you ever validated it? Seriously, over the years your parents, grandparents and other relatives have probably told you stories about an event that you feel you know. However, it’s possible that the story itself grew over the years and it’s not exactly what happened. This is why it’s important to find birth, marriage, and death certificates as well as any other documents you can find.

There are 2 kinds of sources: primary and secondary. Primary sources are the most reliable.

Primary and secondary sources of information

Getting a hold of a primary source is the best finding available. It’s a record of when the event took place and usually someone witnessed it. Marriage certificates are great examples because they have a witness and specific dates when two people got married. This is considered a primary source of information. You will also find the full names of each individual.

A secondary source would be record that was created quite some time after the event had taken place, or by a person who did not actually witness the event. In the example of a marriage certificate, the document is issued at the time of marriage, so it would be considered to be a primary source for the marriage details. The certificate also states the dates of birth of the marriage partners. However these details are noted several decades after the births took place. So although the birth dates appear on the marriage certificate, the certificate would be considered a secondary source for this particular piece of information. A primary source for names and birth dates would be the original birth certificates.

In the end, it’s possible that one document can be both a primary and secondary source. Once you file it away I highly recommend making sure you consider it as both since each piece of information is present. This will allow you to come back to it when it’s needed for future reference. Plus, you will be able to save time and create a more reliable family tree.

Development of the PS3 Game Console

by Tatum Ashbury on January 23, 2010

It has been long since the first gaming console was introduced and through the years, several gaming consoles had been designed to cater the gamer’s interests. Some of them are Super Famicon, Sega Console, Gameboy, PS1 which have perked up the interests of many people. And now, the introduction of one of the latest gadgets in the gaming industry just made quite a great impact in the whole planet.

Way back May 16, 2005; Sony officially introduced the most-awaited PS3 at the E3 Conference as they demonstrate the console’s specifications by sample games like Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Final Fantasy VII with the latest available graphics.

The first product has the specification of as follows: HDMI ports, three Ethernet ports and six USB ports though this was changed a year later to just one HDMI port, one Ethernet port and four USB ports to minimize cost. It was initially introduced in Japan last November 11, 2006 and then in North America that same year.

These are the 20 GB model and the GB 60 model which at that time, costs $499. It includes an HDMI port, Wi-Fi internet, flash card readers and a chrome trim with the brand logo coated in silver and over 81,639 PS3 consoles were sold within that same day it was introduced.

Unfortunately, due to some unforeseen circumstances, the supposed global launch was delayed until March and because of this, Sony advised their clients that they’re eligible for refunds if they had prepaid for it. On the other hand, they can still push through their pre-orders. Though this is not a good start for Sony’s newest product, Sony was still confident about the console’s capability to gain the favor of clients.

Aside from these mishaps, PS3 also received unfavorable reviews in terms of games and the prices. This resulted in an unfavorable marketing position against its console counterparts namely the XBOX and the Wii wherein, both systems have a more economical price, complimented by various games with quality.

Also, some even said that it was not compatible and developers find it difficult to program. Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick also confessed that Nintendo’s XBOX and Wii have higher sales rate. However, despite all these negative feedbacks from around the globe, there are still some who believe in the capability of the PS3 and what it CAN do rather than what has happened in the past. The fact remains that PS3’s remarkable quality is something that gamers can look forward to and it’s just a matter of time before great games will get developed for the said console. Even so, there are a lot who believe that the PS3 is one of the must have gadgets of this time despite the limited availability of good games.

On the other hand, Sony also developed another version of PS3 to support the downtrodding sales trend of their first product. The new product is called the PS3 slim which has received more favorable reviews compared to it’s predecessor, the same with an increase in sales in less than a day after it was first released. With it’s low-power consuming system complimented by a more reasonable price, clients and gamers alike, find it more efficient for their gaming needs and the only criticism that it got was it’s slim, “ugly” appearance, comparing it to the more well-suited appearance of the actual PS3. Overall, the repackaging of the PS3 proves to be one great countermeasure by Sony and if things continue to go well with it, then Sony should be able to gain back their lost revenue with the prior model.

Great computer electronics are here and software resources for good software products.
