The Simpsons is the longest-running American sitcom, the longest-running American animated program, and the longest running American prime time entertainment series. Today, you can even have the famous family printed right onto your personal bank checks.
Matt Groening created The Simpsons for the Fox Broadcasting Company. It was meant to be a parody of the middle-class American lifestyle and the main family members were even based on Groening’s own family members. The show debuted as its own stand alone show on December 17, 1989. It first appeared as shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show on April 19, 1987. Later on, it became the first Fox television series to get in the Top 30 ratings in a season.
The Simpsons has won 26 Annie Awards, 24 Primetime Emmy Awards since debuting, and on January 14, 2000 it got its own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The series itself revolves around a family that lives in the fictional Mid-Western style town of Springfield. (A specific state is never given, as there are many “Springfields” throughout the United States.) Homer is married to Marge Simpson, a housewife and mother to his three children, Maggie, Bart, and Lisa. Bart is a ten-year-old boy that often gets into trouble; Lisa is a smart eight-year-old; and Maggie is the baby who always has pacifier in tow. The characters never age.
There are also many quirky minor characters that include teachers, co-workers, family members, friends, local celebrities, and other townspeople.
